Homestuck

A young man stands in his bedroom

Homestuck is webcomic, made by Andrew Hussie, that ran from April 13, 2009, to April 13, 2016. It's, to summarize it A LOT, a story about four 13 year olds and a new game they're about to play. We'll tocuh upon it further later on.

It's undeniable that the comic got quite the reputation, both from it's creator and it's fans, to the point I have to admit I was scared of even interacting with it... That is until 2024.

The beginning of my adventure

At the beginning of 2024, I found myself bored of what I had. At the time, I was in the Osomatsu-San fandom, which I was starting to quickly hate, and actively trying to find something else to fixate upon. I had mostly tried animes, mangas, videogames and nothing was working for too long.

That is until I saw one of my tumblr mutuals (at the time) reblogging fanart of something... Homestuck. Now, while I was scared of getting into Homestuck, I couldn't help but find myself drawn to it; The lore and characters just seemed the type of stuff I liked, so no matter how much I worried about friends hating me for it, I gave in.

Then a lot of stuff started going down, though not so dramatically. Some of my friends read it, some refused to read it with flimsy excuses and started interacting with me less (which obviously degraded our relationships to me). One person I knew read half of it and became a piece of shit!
But the unfortunate reality of relationships isn't what I'm here for. Homestuck, even with it's outdated nature, is a CRAZY source of inspiration!

Inspirations and Consequences

One of my Homestuck ocs, Veriko Dyones, the prince of mind

As soon as I finished reading, things changed. Not only did it settle down time & space fuckery as one of my favorite tropes, it also made the stillness of my art and writing noticeable to me.
Change was, omce again, inevitable.

Consequence in art

Now, while I was already experimenting with my art by then, it was mostly just different brushes and trying out Osomatsu-Sans style a bit. Homestuck pushed it much further; suddently I wanted to learn how to replicate it's multiple artstyles, down to even the brush! And I wanted to make backgrounds like it, so I learned some editing and photobashing skills! Hell, it even got me to make some smaller animations, that Adopt link pippins wouldn't be moving hadn't I tried to replicate Homestuck.

I do have to confess it had a negative on my normal art however, as I became much more aware of how stiff it was. Drawing bases is like a prison to me, and just lead to boring "doing nothing" poses. It was agonizing to go through that and I ended up focusing more on my homestuck art... But it also opened up the pathway to something I'll talk about in the DELTARUNE section. In a way, I guess it was a good thing it happened.

My favorite style in homestuck is Hero Mode.

Consequence in characters

After so many pages of quirky and flawed characters, I couldn't help but yawn at what my own ocs were.

I wanted to experiment more, much more , with the gross and the weird. There is something so beautiful and freeing about losing the fear of your characters being too weird and I NEEDED it!

Soon came nerdy idiots, ragebaiting assholes, pathetic cowards, weirdo freaks and crazy theorists. It's like a whole world of possibilities was open and boy, I'm Dora the motherfucking explorer!!

We'll talk more about my ocs in the oc page.

My favorite character in Homestuck is Nepeta Leijon

Consequence in writing

Now if there's anything I learned, is that I love a LOT of the tropes in Homestuck.
Time and Space being messed with? Prophecies and the inevitable? Godhood, immortality and death? Meta criticism of roles characters take in a story? New meanings in symbols and words? Adventures that are much bigger than the characters themselves could possibly ever imagine? Isekais that AREN'T set in fucking fantasy medieval times?? All tasty, my dinner!

It was kind of inevitable I'd want to do the same. It is my dream to make something just as impactfully big!
Ever since TimeDetached, my own little homestuck adventure, I've been trying to make bigger than life stories. One day, I'll achieve it.

Final Thoughts

While I understand why many choose to avoid, I'm gonna say... Please give it a try.
It's story, as flawed as it is, ends up being genuinely interesting. It's flash animations are also really cool.
